Horsell Common

Horsell Common is a large area of unspoiled common and wood land just outside Woking, Surrey.

It is most famous for being the location where local author H G Wells, who lived in Maybury, used the Sandpit as the landing site for Martian space craft in his novel “War of the Worlds”. Today it is still a site of pilgrimage for many science fiction fans that travel from all over the world.

There are also many footpaths throughout the woods and across the common, with their website providing information and guides for walks you can follow.

The woods provide some wonderful Autumn colours and I went for a brief visit yesterday afternoon, when the sun finally provided a few rays of light to brighten what had been a dull and grey day.
