Various stretches of the River Wey are within easy reach of home for us, so yesterday we went for a walk alongside the River - starting at the car park on the Ripley road and walking upstream towards Pyrford, though not getting as far as that.
After crossing the road at the bridge, the path starts on the northern side of the river (with the ruins of Newark Priory visible to your left) until you reach Newark Lock. Here you cross via a footbridge and continue the walk, through a gate, and out into meadows as you follow the meandering route the river takes.
Soon after passing through the gate, there is a nice view of the ruins framed by trees. Then we continued our walk until we reached Walsham Gates, where there's a Lock, a Lock-Keepers' cottage and a weir. The path takes you across the start of the weir via a footbridge and round to the cottage.
After the cottage, you can cross a footbridge to get to the other side of the Lock or continue straight on the path that would eventually bring you to Pyrford Lock.
We chose to turn around after this and returned to the car via the same pretty route, having thoroughly enjoyed a beautiful walk.
