Daffodils & Blossom - my Easter Monday

As is normal for me now, Easter Monday being a Bank Holiday also meant it was a day off from work. Having not got out and about much with the camera, apart from a day at Goodwood just over a week earlier, I decided to take advantage of the decent weather and have a short walk on Epsom Downs, to see what blossom etc I could find for photos.

I saw a photo last year of a low view of a bunch of tulips, where the camera had obviously been placed on the ground and the tulips had been in such a good position that they formed a circle as the camera looked towards the sky.

I had been thinking recently about trying something similar with the bunches of daffodils that are much in evidence around the countryside.

Up on the Downs, I found a suitable bunch of daffs. It wasn’t possible to place the camera in the middle, so I opted for propping it up on the ground to obtain a low view to include blooms and sky. I played around with angle of view and varying the focal length on my wide angle zoom lens to alter what I was able to capture. This was a little trial and error, cos checking after each shot meant that I had moved the camera from the angle I had just used and trying to ‘correct’ any part of that previous pic for the next one involved guess work on getting the right angle of view again.

I did however obtain a few very pleasing shots, with nice yellow for the daffs and blue for the sky - this being something I will try again with other floral subjects when in suitable locations.

From there, I wandered a little further to reach a spot where I was already aware that there was blossom on the trees. Here I took a variety of angles of small parts of the blossom, using the Macro setting on my Canon zoom and trying to keep the iso low and therefore the depth of field shallow so that the chosen spike of blossom really stood out from a blurry background.

I also took a few shots of individual stems of bluebells and cowslip, as I again tried to be artistic and some of those resulted in pleasing shots.

As the photography is something I particularly enjoy, especially when I have an idea and succeed in creating images I am pleased with, this was a very good morning for my mental health and my mood.
