Glorious Goodwood-79MM

The Goodwood MM79 signalled the start of my Motorsport season for 2022, this being a meeting I had been looking forward to since the MM78 rounded out my 2021 season back in October. I was again the very lucky recipient of an entry ticket, this time for the Saturday of this splendid event.

This allowed me to watch the practice sessions for most of the races due that weekend, plus stunning demos - the first being for V10 engined F1 cars from late 80’s and early 90’s and a truly captivating Porsche 956 & 962 demo that ran at sunset.

During the afternoon the programme of events meant I got to see a few races as well.

I arrived really early on a cold and frosty morning, with the weather playing true to forecast throughout the day and providing a glorious sunny day at the foot of the South Downs. My early start afforded me the time for a paddock wander, in which there was simply too much too see and absorb. History at every turn and it would probably have been possible to absorb myself totally around the paddock for the day, if I had not wanted to watch the track action.

Practice for the Gerry Marshall Trophy Race saloon cars was first on track and I was able to get panning shots of the cars passing the swathe of daffodils at Woodcote corner. Having achieved what I wanted at that spot, I moved a little to the exit of the Chicane to at least capture the same cars through a different angle.

I had resolved that this time I was not going to walk around the entire lap so, having ventured back to the car to collect my food and drink supplies, I headed off to Madgwick as it’s a great corner for action pics.

The F1 demo cars sounded fabulous, though I cannot be alone in thinking it would have been great if they had been released for proper laps rather than running behind a pace car.

Thereafter I watched a few races before heading back to the paddock to catch up with friends ahead of the sunset demo of the Porsches.

The sight and sound of the largest collection of these cars on track at one time since their heyday was one that I am glad I hang around for at the end of the day, as they ran at sunset which made the demo even more evocative.

This rounded out my day, another magical Goodwood day - lucky with the weather again, brilliant setting and Goodwood always delivers action and excitement which is always so well presented.
