I had a photographic 'pang', I wanted to go somewhere for a sunrise and I had the thought of heading to Selsey. We have been there during daylight hours on a couple of occasions and knew that one beach is looking East, so I checked the weather forecast and the tide times for the area and it looked like a good plan for the upcoming Sunday even though it meant an early start to be there in time. Nothing ventured, nothing gained and all that.
Having set the alarm and got up at the appropriate early hour, we drove down to Selsey and arrived at the East Beach car park in good time.
As it transpired, by the time we were actually ready to leave the car and walk to the beach, we were only just about right for the time. As we headed onto the footpath at the back of the beach, the colours were already starting to appear for the dawn glow that precedes the actual sunrise.
I quickly got set up with the tripod in a suitable location to include foreground interest from the small waves of the incoming tide and started shooting.
Soon, I attached my recently bought Variable ND Filter. I bought this before we went to USA on our holiday in July and first used it while on holiday, finding it very useful even though I will admit to still being at the experimental stage with it.
This enabled me to capture slow enough exposures and obtain strong colours as nature did its best in front of me.
Eventually, the sun appeared on and then above the horizon and I continued shooting for a while before looking for further interesting spots.
Having got what we came for and with the sun soon disappearing behind some large clouds, we headed for home. While driving, I suggested a stop at the Tree Tunnel at Halnaker - a place we have visited before, but previously at a time nearer to Autumn. As it turned out, with the lack of sunlight this morning, the Autumn would have been a better time to visit as there will be greater colour to shoot.
